How Successful Are Hair Transplants

By:

Hair plays an integral role in making or breaking a persons image. With effects of hair loss ranging from public shyness to shattered confidence, hair transplants are fast becoming a common cosmetic procedure. Hair transplant, when done to perfection, can change a persons life for better. The skill, technique and expertise of doctors doing hair transplants all over the world can vary from each other, and so does the cost of surgery. Cosmetic surgeries of all types can be quite expensive in the United States but can be accomplished at a fraction of a cost in other developing countries like India, Malaysia, Thailand or Singapore.

Basically, Hair Transplants is a surgical procedure where hair follicles from the donor site are moved to the balding site. This procedure covers the bald patch by placing over it a graft containing hair follicles that are resistant to balding. Hair naturally grows in these follicles in groupings of 1-4, hence filling your bald scalp with completely natural hair!

Hair follicles can be harvested by following several different techniques, each with its own pros and cons. Irrespective of the technique used, whats of prime important is the proper extraction of the follicle. The two most common ways used today to extract donor grafts are follicular unit extraction and strip excision harvesting. Out of these two, the most commonly used technique worldwide is the strip excision harvesting where strips of hair tissues are removed using a scalpel from the donor site. Utmost care is taken to ensure that only intact hair follicles are removed and grafted.

Just like any other surgical treatment, even hair transplant is followed by several side effects. Shock loss or hair thinning is one of the most common of them but one need not worry as it is only temporary. Shedding of hair in and around the area of hair transplant is quite a common occurrence and not a cause of concern. Wait for the newly transplanted hair to grow back or for the shed hair to return. Swelling of the forehead or scalp is another side effect that is experienced by a majority of patients who undergo hair transplant.

It would be safe to say that Hair Transplants, when done under expert medical supervision, can be an extremely successful cosmetic procedure. However, hair loss might occur several years after the surgery. This could leave you with odd bald patches here and there which can be rectified either by transplanting more hair or removing the odd patches.
