How Skills Gaps Are Hurting Your Business

By:

The lack of sufficient skills in a company is often referred to as a skills gap. The usual sort of situation with regard to this is a small to midsized company that has a limited number of employees. These employees or administrators are often strong and well experienced in certain areas. But the fact that this is a moderate sized business with a limited payroll budget means that new hires are fairly rare. Family members or friends may also be involved, and these are often hired more for personal reasons than for skills. There is nothing per se wrong with any of this, but it can result in skill levels that differ for different areas of a business. This kind of inadvertent skills gap can hurt a business in the following sorts of ways:

Reduces Productivity
The basic idea is that a skills gap will eventually hurt productivity. Any business depends on the coordination and good performance of all areas - from marketing, to finance, to employee relations, to hiring, to production and so on - in order to be at its most effective and productive. If one area is not up to par with the others, the whole chain of business activity can be shaken, resulting in lower productivity.

Skills Need to Complement Each other
As is implied by the above, all the skills in a business need to complement each other. They are interconnected and interdependent. For instance, production is dependent on product development Both are dependent on payroll so the employees involved are paid, and payroll depends on finance so that funds are allocated well and the budget is accurate. Again, if individuals in one of these areas are less experienced and competent than in others, they do not complement each other as well as they could. The interconnectedness suffers and the skills are not put to their best use generally. Increasing the skill levels in of these areas can give the whole business flow a boost.

Professionalism
Skills gaps make a business seem unprofessional, and this can hurt public perception of the company both by customers and by other businesses. For instance, if there are skills gaps in the customer service department, customers may become critical of the business even though the products or services are excellent. If there are poorly skilled workers in the purchasing department, other companies may find doing business with the company difficult.

Affects Communication
Skills gaps affect communication between areas of a company just as they affect performance and productivity. Skilled workers are usually also able to communicate well with other individuals in the work flow. Conversely, if someone is poorly skilled in their job area, they will not be able to articulate important information effectively and this can create difficult situations for other workers and business contacts.

Errors
Finally, skills gaps can lead to simple errors, both because things are simply not done right and because of the communication problems mentioned above. Errors can hurt the reputation of a business and are obviously not good for productivity. Sometimes they may even result in costly recalls or refunds to customers. This is obviously not what a company wants.

The solution to all this is to identify skills gaps and correct them either by renewed training efforts or by hiring better skilled employees. Often existing workers do not need to be fired - their talents and skills can simply be better assigned or utilized. Sometimes an individual may have more skills than they appear to in their particular job position. In any event, new solutions can always be worked out that fill skills gaps and make for a well-balanced company that is productive, professional, and whose employees' skills are well utilized.
