How Paint Was Discovered

Paint is as old as human kind, as paint evidences could be seen in early painting caves. Later on, when paints and varnishes came to be more and more developed due to all sorts of readily and naturally obtainable paints, such as, those based on the acacia tree.

The composition of the paintings of that time reveals very high quality paints which have passed the test of time. It is almost unbelievable how the paint that was used to cover the walls of ancient temples that were exposed, not for months, but for centuries, to the assaults of the atmosphere, such as sun, low and high temperature, wind, rain and snow, and are still almost as brilliant as they were thousands of years before. The preparation of the oil compounds that the ancient civilizations have used, seem to have excelled the modern ones.

The Egyptians, for example, have put gummy substances and applied them by using extremely skillful methods, without being necessary to use any blending or mixture. They would add paint on their canvas, or the ceilings of their houses. The basic colors that were known at that time were: white and black, blue and red, yellow and green.

But the best preserving and the most valuable paints are the oil-based ones. They are so valuable because of their main characteristics: when they dry, a thin film is formed on the surface. In the 19th century there were many type of oils used in paint making, but among them, the most common ones were: the linseed oil, the castor oil and the fish oil. Latest developments have brought forward a new type of oil that is so much better: the tall oil which is a byproduct in paper market.

After the 16th century, there is a high demand of oil paints which became more popular than ever. Legendary painters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, who combined these paints with wax, brought the oil paints to another level, as they would not crack and crumble of the painting. Moreover, one of the most important features of the oil paint is it's so called "long open time". The painter is able to add any changes he would like weeks after putting the paint on, as it takes longer to set and, hence, the artist has got more time to blend and finish his work of art.
