How Often You Should Get Your Alignment Checked

By:

There are many different factors which go into the performance capabilities of your vehicle. You will need to have an oil change regularly as well as having your tires changed. One thing which is often discounted by people when they are getting their vehicle serviced is the importance of the steering system in the performance of the vehicle. They feel this is only important if you are looking to drive your car straight and that they are willing to put up with the vehicle pulling to one side rather than having to spend the money to get it fixed. The problem is that this is the kind of mindset which will get you into trouble.

The reason why the alignment is so important for your vehicle is because when the alignment is off it can cause you to burn more fuel than you need to. It can also cause unnecessary wear on your tires. Having bad alignment can also cause problems to other parts of your vehicle which will lead to more expensive auto repair visits. It is the reason why many experts ask that you make sure to always keep your vehicle aligned no matter what the cost to you at the time.

When to Get Your Wheels Aligned

In order to make sure that your wheels are aligned properly, it is recommended that you have the alignment checked every 7,500 miles. The other modern wisdom is to have the alignment checked every year. The reason for this is that two factors can cause your vehicle to get out of alignment. Driving in bad conditions can throw off your alignment. Additionally, having your vehicle parked at anything other than 100% flat conditions can cause additional pressure on side of the vehicle rather than the other.

What Is Checked for Wheel Alignment

When you go in for a wheel alignment, they will check to see that all of the wheels are aligned to point straight ahead. If one or more of the wheels are turning in a different direction, there is a problem. It can be fixed easily enough by a skilled mechanic. If caught early enough, it will mean a simple correction. If it takes longer to get noticed, it can lead to other major problems in the drive train as well as problems in other parts of the vehicle.

What a Bad Alignment Can Effect

If you are tempted to put off getting a wheel alignment because you do not want to shell out the money, keep in mind that you could be setting yourself up for even greater expenses down the road. You may even have to replace the tires and other parts of the steering system. On the lower end, you can be looking at bad fuel efficiency if you keep driving with wheels out of alignment. On the more expensive end, you could end up throwing rods or damaging camshafts. It is better to simply get the alignment when you get the chance.
