For quite some time Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation dominated the video game market. In order to compete with each other the companies made the game console more and more powerful. This meant better graphics and faster gameplay.
Surprisingly they have recently been outsold by the Nintendo Wii. The Wii got where it is, not by going for power and better graphics, but by innovation and better gameplay. Their innovation was especially evident in their motion sensitive game controllers. These controllers greatly improved the gaming experience for Nintendo gamers.
In order to hold on to their share of the multi billion dollar game market Nintendo will have to come up with a great new console in the next 4 years or risk losing to their competitors.
I believe that Nintendo will turn to neural interface game control devices. That is a device that attaches to your head and allows you to control games with your thoughts. I do not believe that this device will be used on it's own, but together with another hand held controller, much like the Wii controller and the nunchuck. This will be necessary because the technology isn't up to being the sole interface yet.
Neural interface technology is already in existence, but not in wide spread use, much like motion sensitive control devices were, before the Nintendo Wii was released. To understand what it would be like we can look at two soon to be released neural game interface devices, the Emotive Epoc and the Neural Impulse Actuator. The NIA will be released Christmas 2008 and the Epoc is scheduled for early 2009. These devices work with electrodes that monitor the change in your skin, your nerves and skin. The NIA is a more basic devices with 3 electrodes that goes on your forehead while the Epoc has 18 spread out over your head.
