In todays world, a home without a television is like a home without running water or electricity. Unfortunately, television has become a basic need to families.
It is evident that television is an addiction and experts have agreed to this notion. Many teachers believe that children who watch too much television perform at a lower standard than others who balance their time watching television with time spent studying.

Experts believe that watching too much television can affect a childs development. They claim that television slows down a childs ability to reason since watching television does not evoke intellectual responses from the child. According to behavioral therapist Marie Winn, television is a plug-in-drug. This label alludes to all those who are simply addicted to watching television.

Some persons use television as an escape from lifes real problems and protect themselves by being confined to watching television. Teenagers, however, must realize that the teenage years are very critical years in their lives and that some of the decisions made at this time will affect them for the rest of their lives. It is at this stage that plans for higher education are discussed and career choices are made. Most teenagers with good sense want to enter high quality universities. It is therefore necessary for American children to get the high SAT scores which are necessary to enter these colleges. Teenagers who want to get good results must watch less TV.

Everything in life must be done in moderation; watching television is no exception to this rule. Teenagers must face the fact that television takes them away from their school work, social connections, and critical thinking skills. TV certainly will not help them to get into Ivy League universities. They must exercise some amount of self-discipline with regard to watching the television. If this recreational activity is curtailed, more time will be available for studying. Sometimes, parents should cancel the household cable package altogether to help their children break the TV addiction.

Many teenagers have taken this advice, especially when they are preparing for SATs. Getting high scores on SAT exams means the more likelihood of getting a scholarship. Many teenagers choose to join a study group rather than watch television and have seen the fruit of their labor studying pays off through higher SAT scores. With a high SAT score, a student has more choice when it comes to deciding on which college to attend.
