How Much Neatness Do You Expect From Your Kids

By:

There are so many important things we have to teach out kids about the world and how to live in it. We are very lucky if we get most of their teaching in by the time they leave home! We must teach them to socialize well with others, know the value of education, have self esteem, and take pride in all they do. It is definitely not easy, but then no one ever said parenting would be easy. Far from it as a matter of fact. Some kids, as you probably know by now if you have any kids, do some things better than others. No child is perfect contrary to what we might believe about our own. As their parent, we, probably more so than anyone else, know what limitations or shortcomings our own kids have. It is our job to try and help them deal with and overcome any bad habits they might have. Take laziness and sloppiness for example.

What do you do when you have a child that absolutely will not pick up after themselves? It can be so frustrating for the parent that is in charge of cleaning the house most of the time because there can be a constant stream of things to pick up after this one child or more children if you are unlucky enough to not even have one neat child. Of course, when a kid is good in so many other ways, it might be a little easier to overlook this flaw, but it can make you wonder if the habit of not picking up after themselves might eventually carry over into other areas of their life.

This is something that might be worth watching out for, but a child that is lazy in one way might not necessarily be lazy with other things. They can be sloppy and unorganized, but still be a genius in school. They might actually care a lot about their appearance and physical cleanliness. It is enough to make you scratch your head with curiosity. How well you handle their laziness at home is another thing. If you accept it and never try to correct them it can be a habit that they never overcome. If you stay on their backs about it all of the time, chances are they will just stop listening. Teaching a kid to be neat can be very difficult depending on the child and some of them just never get it.

It might be said that having a neat child is not everything. If they excel in other things and do not appear to be damaged in any way other than just being a little on the sloppy side, perhaps it is not such a big deal. Of course, you never want to let it get too out of hand either. Find a medium ground with them and only take so much. When you can not walk across the floor of their room at all, it is time to put your foot down. After all, you don't want the health department coming out. With kids, you always have to pick your battles. Only you can decide when the laziness has become a real problem and then perhaps you should seek the advice of a counselor to see what you can do that might improve the situation.
