How Much Money Do You Throw Away Paying Late Fees

By:

Today it is harder than ever for some families to stay on their individual budget. Everything is costing more like groceries, utilities, clothing, insurance premiums, house payments or rent. Even when a family does their best to curb their expenses and live as frugally as they can, they can still have a hard time making their bills on time without being penalized.

One of the worst mistakes you can make when paying any type of bill is being late on that payment when it has a penalty or late fee attached to it. Usually bank payments, mortgage payments, home rental, storage rental, almost everything you can think of can have a late fee attached to it when you do not meet the due date. Of course, many of these places will give you a grace period. A grace period is the amount of time between when your payment is due and when a late fee will be applied. It is normally about 10 to 14 days at most.

It is perfectly fine to take advantage of that grace period if your bill has one, but it is so important to not go past that grace period. Late fees can run into quit a bit of money if you have to pay them all of th e time. What is just as important as the money you waste paying late fees is that they will often report late payments and it will leave a bad mark on your credit report.

You might be able to avoid paying any late fees at all if you keep track of when everything you have to pay is due. Having a calender with all payments written down on it will help to keep up with the dates. Write down the amount of the late fee if you go past your grace period and it will help to remind you of the money you can keep in your pocket if you find a way to pay the bill before that date. Use a large desk top calender that gives you plenty of space to make notes. Once you have your recurring bills under control and are getting them paid on time, you will soon realize the money you are saving. A late fee on an electric bill could be twenty dollars or more and when you think about it, that is enough for a meal or two for an average family.
