How Mindmapping Changed The Way I Run My Business

By:

As a lifelong listmaker, I found mindmapping did not come naturally to me. I first tried it at the urging of a friend several years ago, but I kept running out of space and my notes would run off the edge of the paper. It also gave me a serious case of writer's cramp, so I gave up on mind mapping for a few years.

Then I heard about some free mindmapping software available on the Internet, so I surfed around a bit until I found and tried a couple. This was marginally better, but not enough to convert me from my lists.

Then, just a few months ago, I found a different piece of mind mapping software that changed everything for me. Mindmapping works on a single principle, that you have a major topic identified in the middle and several branches and sub-branches coming from that. The maps can be as big and complicated as you like, or as simple. But the software is not all created equal, so you have to search a bit to find one that works for you.

Here's what made the difference for me. I was working on a plan to create an audio CD to sell on Amazon, and there was quite a list of things to do, including creating the product itself, finding someone to create the graphics package, get it made by CreateSpace and listed for sale on Amazon, promote it and send traffic to its page. Oh yes, and one more little thing: I had to apply to the IRS for a tax number because I don't live in the U.S.

Now if I had made my usual lists for this, I would have checked off the item about applying to the IRS, and then I would have been stuck waiting for their reply. But when I laid it all out on a simple mindmap, it was clear to me that while I waited, there were many more items I could complete, so by the time I received my tax number everything else was ready and I could get my CD up there making money for me.

That's when I became a convert, and since then I've become map happy. I used my mindmapping software to make my business plan for this year, to launch my monthly Wilkie Webinar program, to make notes while listening to teleseminars, to capture new ideas I wasn't quite ready to work on so that they wouldn't escape, and so much more.

If you haven't tried mindmapping, I urge you to experiment with the software that's available and make a few maps. I predict you'll become as happily addicted as I have!
