How Important Is Building Backlinks To A Successful Seo Campaign?

The value of a good link cannot be overstated. It is very important that you incorporate linking strategies into your overall SEO campaign. But why is this so important? It all goes back to when Google first came out with their revolutionary idea for a search engine. Before Google, the search engines were fairly easy to spam since a large amount of their algorithm was based off of on-site content such as Titles and Meta Tags and actual site content. Googles idea was simple; they wanted to incorporate the amount of backlinks a site had into their algorithm. According to Google, this was a great indicator of how useful a sites content was. Obviously the more people that linked to a site, the more relevant and useful its content must be.

Ever since day one, Google has put a high importance on backlinks. Over the years, their algorithm has changed, but the importance of backlinks is still one of the biggest factors in their ranking algorithm. Now, more than ever, it is important that the backlinks be relevant to your site and the landing page content. Because Google puts so much importance on backlinks, websites and SEOs have found ways to exploit this part of the algorithm. As a result, Google fights back by devaluing certain links, or making other links more valuable than others.

Backlinks are also valuable because they assist the search engines in finding and spidering your sites content. The search engines only have one way to find new content on the web, and that is by following links. If the search engines find a link to your content from a reliable source, that content gets assigned a high value and is therefore more likely to rank higher for keywords found in the anchor text pointing back to the site or the content of the page.

The more credible the site that the backlink originates from, the more value that link can pass on to the other website. As a website gains value, it is also more likely to be seen as an authority in the search engines eyes. Google is notorious for basing rankings off of brand name and notoriety. Wikipedia is a prime example they rank on the first page for potentially tens of millions of queries.

Nearly all of the search engines have followed Googles lead in one way or another by incorporating backlinks into their ranking algorithms. Different engines value links in different ways, but one thing is for certain, they all play a role in increasing your search engine rankings and web presence.
