How Ginger Helps Fight Nausea

By:

Ginger is a natural herb or spice which you can grow in pots in your own kitchen, or you can purchase it at your local grocery store year round. There are many health benefits that you can obtain from ginger by making it a part of your daily diet. Some of these benefits are a healthy heart, prevent cancer, reduce inflammation due to arthritis, and it also helps you to fight many stomach problems such as nausea and cramping.

Nausea

Nausea causes you to throw up, or just feel like throwing up. It can result from motions like going around in circles, boat rides and so on. Nauseous feelings can also occur when you are sick with the fever, are pregnant or have received medical treatments such as chemo or surgery.

Relaxes Stomach Muscles

The active ingredient in ginger is the gingerol oils which give ginger the spicy taste as well as the warming effect. These oils help your stomach muscles to relax and block the vomit reflex. It does not matter why you are feeling nauseous, whether due to pregnancy, fever, flu, or motion sickness, ginger can help you to reduce the sick feeling, and prevent vomiting.

Ginger tea is one of the tastiest and quickest ways that you can obtain the benefits of ginger to stop the vomit reflex. If you are planning a trip that you think might cause you to feel nauseous you can drink ginger tea about 20 minutes before you go on that trip to prevent the nausea. You should continue to sip ginger tea while you are on the trip so that it can continue to relax your stomach muscles.

More Effective Than Dramamine

Dramamine is a drug that is commonly used to treat motion sickness and nausea, and studies have shown that ginger is more effective in preventing nausea than this drug. The study was done on students who were prone to motion sickness. One group was given ginger, and another was given Dramamine. And they discovered that those who received the ginger were able to withstand the motion for up to 1.5 minutes longer than those who were given Dramamine.

Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is very easy to make, as all you need to do is grate a small piece of ginger and steep in some hot water for about 10 minutes. You can add other ingredients such as cinnamon, nutmeg and a natural sweetener to help take the sting out of ginger.
