How Exercise Affects Your Hormones

By:

Many people would much rather go on a strict diet than follow an exercise program in order to lose weight. This is understandable because exercise is not something that a lot of people enjoy doing. For one thing, it is physically tiring and oftentimes difficult especially for the non-athletic types and beginners in general. Also, it is repetitive and therefore boring. Lastly, with exercise, it takes some time for results to be noticeable.

An experiment conducted by some researchers yielded a new and surprising finding about the effect of exercise. It was found that exercise not only burns calories but that it also suppresses the appetite.

The common belief is that exercise is done mainly to develop lean muscle and burn fat and that to control the appetite, one has to take weight loss supplements. This interesting discovery thus adds more value to exercise as an ideal weight loss method.

Not all types of exercises have the same effect on the appetite however. The same study shows that aerobic exercise has a stronger effect on the appetite than non-aerobic exercise. Regardless of the type, exercise stimulates two types of hormones Ghrelin and Peptide YY. Ghrelin is known to stimulate the appetite, while Peptide YY suppresses it. In the experiment, researchers discovered that Chrelin goes down during non-aerobic exercise, while Peptide YY is boosted during aerobic exercise. The implication is clear dieters would get more weight loss benefits doing aerobic exercises. The reason dieters feel hungrier when they go on an exercise program than when they simply dieted is most likely because the routine consists of non-aerobic exercises (strength training/weight lifting).

As mentioned, Ghrelin is a hormone that enhances the appetite. This is why some dieters who opt to follow exercise routines tend to feel hungrier more often than when they did not include it in their weight loss programs yet. Chances are such individuals have exercise routines that focus on weight training. To enable the release of the appetite suppressing Peptide YY hormones, one has to indulge in aerobic exercises such as walking, running, biking and swimming.

Aerobic exercise has always been a popular method of fat burning. Now that it has been proven to also curb the appetite, aerobic exercise may be considered as the most expedient way to lose weight the healthy way.
