How Does Soap Actually Work?

By:

Soap making is a wonderful activity that many people enjoy. Soap making is fun because you are able to make your own soap the way you want, with your favorite organic essential oils and scents. But when you make your own soap is the soap still doing it's job properly? How does soap actually work?

Soaps have sodium or potassium fatty acids salt that is produced from a chemical reaction known as saponification. Soap has molecules inside of it that like the water and some molecules that don't. Since the soap molecules work with and against water, they are able to work well with water and oil.

Soap has a hydrophillic head that likes water, and a hydrophobic chain that gets along well with oil. When they interact with both oil and water, the tail and head of the molecule work with both substances. They suspend the oil from the water, making oil removable.

Once the oil is suspended from the substance it can be detached from skin or whatever substance it was holding on to. If the oil was used on a dish, for example, soap allows it to be separated from and rinsed away with the help of water. Soap allows you to get the item clean, where water would not be able to.

Like oil, grease is insoluble in water. Grease needs soap to separate it from water. The non-polar hydrocarbon molecules break the grease molecules up so it, along with any dirt or grime that had attached to it, can become separated and rinsed away.

Soaps are also a cleaning agent. They are able to separate dirt from items as well, and make the item clean again. Dirt is always going to be around, so having soap makes life much easier to clean things off and keep infections and sickness from spreading.

Soaps can be made with anti-bacterial to kill germs now even. Anti-bacterial soap is recommended to use with hand washing to prevent getting sick. This is especially important after using the restroom and when one is sick already with a cold or flu.

Soap making is a great way to have your own, unique style of soap. It will still work properly in cleaning surfaces. The difference between making your own soap and buying it is the pleasure of having made the soap yourself.
