How Does Graphic Design Differ From Web Design?

By:

Are graphic design and web design the same thing? Does hiring a graphic artist insure getting mean getting a great business website? While the concepts are related, they are not always the same thing. The two concepts can also overlap at times.

Graphic designers, or graphic artists, as they are sometimes referred to, have varying levels of skill and training. Some are capable of delivering great web page services. Others may only work in print such as publications like magazines, newspapers or book covers. Some specialize in logo creation, which is one of the more highly paid areas of design work. Some specialize in corporate branding which ties all the elements needed by a business together. This gives a specific look to all materials a company uses such as business cards, invoices, logos, brochures etc. so that they can be instantly recognized.

In many cases, designers skill sets overlap but print and web require different knowledge. Print knowledge requires familiarity with CMYK or cyan, magenta, yellow and black color system. This is the color system used when printing something. How to handle things like bleeds so no white border appears where it isnt wanted, or page numbering are things a print graphic artist will know. Web design uses a different color system called RGB, or red, green, blue. Some of the things used to create pages are knowledge of HTML and programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop. A web designer will know that images used on the web require different sizing and file requirements than something in print.

Training and education for web and graphic designers can vary greatly. Some successful designers are self taught. The problem with this is that it may not expose them to enough concepts overall thus limiting them in some ways. On the job training gives some the knowledge to provide great design. Again, this may only expose the designer to the skills used in that particular business arena. Trade schools or college level courses in graphic design also provide training to many. While this training opens the doors to many jobs, some employers want a four year degree. Some of the best designers have a BFA, or bachelor of fine arts, degree that gives them a great amount of knowledge and training.

Because all modern designers use computers to ply their trade, staying current with updates to programs and new technology is a must. The knowledge base for a web designer has changed dramatically in a very short time and with more changes always coming.

Researching the skills and background of a designer or design firm can help determine the needs of a business. Many times the same person can sometimes do web design and graphic design.
