How Does Bone Cancer Begin?

By:

Bone cancer is of two types. One is the primary bone cancer and the other one is the secondary bone cancer. There are various things that are responsible for the beginning of bone cancer. Given below is the list of few things that lead to bone cancer:

  • Genetic mutations

There are various normal cells in the body. They have several mechanisms due to which their growth is controlled. Their death and division is also controlled. Consequently, there is typical division and growth in the bones when needed. They also have to replace the dying cell. Cells tend to become very cancerous when there is development of mutations in the genes. This will no longer cause control over the body. There is continuous division and growth of the cells from a small mass that is known as tumor. Sometimes, mutations are also acquired in the DNA. The cells are thus given an additional ability for invading other tissues or making new blood vessels.

  • The most common form of bone cancer is the secondary bone cancer. This type of bone cancer will mainly result from the cancer which originates in other parts of the body and spreads to the bone. On the other hand, some kinds of cancer begin in the bone itself. Thus, it is known as primary bone cancer.

  • The three main kinds of primary bone cancer are Chondrosarcoma, Osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma family. Osteosarcoma is mainly the cancer of cells due to which the hard matrix of the bone is made up. Chondrosarcoms are cancers of the connective tissue and the cartilage. Tumors in the Ewing sarcoma family are made up of fats and soft tissues. However, they begin in the bone itself.

  • Sometimes, the genetic mutations cause the bone to be very sporadic. This means that their occurrence is natural as they divide and age. On the other hand, there are various factors that can be predisposed for the development of bone cancer. This includes various kinds of inherited genetic disorders such as Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome, retinoblastoma, multiple exostoses and Li-Fraumeni syndrome.

  • Paget's disease of the bone is another risk factor. This is a condition due to which the older adults are affected. This is mainly a precancerous condition. The formation of cells is abnormal. Finally, the people who are having high doses of external radiation or have received radiation therapy are very likely to develop bone cancer.
