How Does A Used Bmw Stack Up Against The Competition?

In the early part of this year we saw a significant drop in the number of used car sales in the UK. This was primarily down to the government's car scrappage scheme which saw more people take the opportunity to take on a brand new vehicle. However, the scheme has come to an end now and although some manufacturers have chosen to extend it under their own steam, we can still expect people to return to the second hand market. So what's best? Does a used BMW hold up against the competition?

The grand old man of the German auto manufacturing industry traditionally stands up well. Classic models such as the 5 series have stood the test of time and developed their own loyal following. Best of all there is every chance you might get a good price on a used BMW 5 Series E60. This has just undergone its latest serious facelift. Gone are some of the extravagant stylings of the previous generation replaced instead by a more sober look perfectly in keeping with the heritage of the model. Fans are delighted, but what does it mean for the E60.

It is a great car, no doubts there. However it lacks the classic appeal so if you're looking for a good use BMW, then this could be your best bet.

Another option might be used Toyota Corollas. These offer excellent levels of reliability - even the older models. It is perfectly possible to get an old model for around 700 pounds and still get many years of outstanding motoring. Their prices are likely to be further depressed by the scandal surrounding the sticking accelerator on some of the latest models. It has undoubtedly affected the brands reputation. However older models are unaffected and so still provide excellent value for money.

Another option might be a used Renault Espace. This is derided in some quarters, especially by the likes of Top Gear, but they are remarkable cars. Their chassis is made of fiberglass, which means it doesn't rust. Their engines have been known to go comfortably beyond 200,000 miles, so even an old model has plenty of steam left in its legs.

A used BMW is highly prized. You might have to deploy some pretty innovative ideas to make sure you get the kind of deal you're looking for. However, if you shop around there's always something out there just waiting to be discovered.
