How Do You Maintain A Healthy Diet?

By:

Eating the right foods in the correct quantities is essential for high energy levels, weight control and optimal health. So how do you maintain a healthy diet? In this article I am going to cover the steps you need to take to follow such a diet without having to worry about being led astray by the wrong food choices over the long term.

Know Your Nutrition

The first thing you need to know is what sort of foods are best for you and which ones you should avoid. Once you know exactly how good and how bad individual foods are for you, it is only then that you can make a conscious choice to regulate the intake of foods which are not especially healthy. Remember, there is no such thing as a food that is going to ruin your diet, but too many of the wrong things can spell disaster for your diet and overall health.

Use Your Common Sense

Now it's quite obvious that eating things that are sugar laden and refined are not really good for you. Not only do sugary foods cause spikes in insulin levels, they can also lead to cravings for even more of these types of foods. Any foods you eat which have a high glycemic index results in an insulin spike which readily converts to body fat. Also food particularly high in simple carbohydrates are readily stored as fat, so you will want to keep your intake of these foods to a sensible level.

Alcohol also contains a lot of calories, especially beer, so if you enjoy several pints of that a night or more than the occasional glass of wine, you should curb your intake so that you aren't drinking yourself into obesity.

Going Natural and Organic

Foods that are natural and colorful are usually good for you. This includes fresh fruit and vegetables. If possible and if you can afford the financial outlay, spend a little extra to eat more organic foods or even grow your own. Many fresh fruits and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber which will give you more energy and vitality.

Essential Fatty Acids

To ensure you are getting essential fatty acids in your diet, try to eat foods that are naturally high in these things such as fresh fish. Flax seed oil contains type 3 and type 6 which get converted to prostaglandins in your body. It's important to note that your body can't make these naturally, so eating foods containing them is imperative. Contrary to popular belief, nuts can also help you lose weight and help you maintain a healthy diet as they contain a lot of good fats. Just be sure not to eat to many of them as they are also high in calories.
