Health professionals determine whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight, obese, or extremely obese by their Body Mass Index (BMI).

You don't have to go to the gym to know your BMI. You can easily find it online by simply entering your height and weight. A computerized number will appear with your BMI that tells you if you are considered to be overweight or obese. Adults with normal weight have a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. A BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and one of 30 or more is obese. This will give you a good idea of the percentage of fat on your body and how much weight loss you need.

What is the best way to reduce body fat?

There are two ways that work best in reducing the percentage of fat on a person's body. They are exercise and eating the proper food. Reducing body fat takes time, especially if you want theweight loss to be permanent. Start walking 15 minutes each day and work up to 30 minutes. As you begin to get into better physical shape, you can do other exercises and add weight lifting to your exercise routine. You will also want to eventually begin running, swimming, or another strenuous exercise that will speed up your fat loss. Choose an activity that will be something you enjoy because you will need to exercise for life to keep the extra weight off.

Many weight loss professionals say that a balanced diet containing fat, carbs, and protein is best. They often recommend eating six small meals each day rather than three larger ones, eliminating the possibility that additional calories from a large meal could be stored as fat. Small meals also help to ward off hunger and avoid the possibility of binging due to extreme hunger. If you keep fruits and vegetables available for healthy snacks to eat, you can avoid unhealthy snacks.
