A womans vagina is the one area of her body that gets the least attention. Maybe because it is out of sight, obscured by a bush of hair and hidden in an area that isnt always exposed unlike the other parts of the body.

The vagina, although it is discreetly situated can still become infected. Women who are unlucky enough to acquire an infection whether or not it appears serious will experience tons of discomforting symptoms. The symptoms experienced depend on the type of infection and of course, the severity of the condition.

However, there is one infection that is widely talked about and known by the female species because of its constant occurrence. This infection is called a vaginal thrush. A lot of women consult their gynecologists reporting symptoms that indicate a vaginal thrush.

Now although this has been a topic for discussion for years now, this article will talk about it in further detail and we will place more emphasis on what concerns most women and that is the all familiar question that they shoot when they begin to experience the first signs of the infection, how do you get a vaginal thrush?

First and foremost, a brief definition of a vaginal thrush together with its manifesting symptoms will be addressed first to avoid confusion. A vaginal thrush is a kind of yeast infection caused by the yeast or the fungus Candida Albicans. When an infection strikes a woman, it creates an annoying irritation in the vaginal area with symptoms that are hard to ignore.

The yeast that is responsible for a thrush normally resides in the vagina but only in minimal numbers. It remains in this quantity because of the presence of the good bacteria that keeps it in check. The most popular and proven cause for a woman to have a vaginal yeast infection is when the fungus grows in abundance exceeding its normal limits whenever the numbers of the good bacteria diminishes. And this is what every woman should try to avoid because when an imbalance happens most likely an infection will occur sooner or later.

The telltale signs that would indicate a vaginal yeast infection would include the following:

Unrelenting itchiness in and around the vaginal area
Pain upon urination or dysuria
Pain during sexual intercourse or dyspareunia
Redness, swelling and burning in the vaginal area as well as around it
A whitish vaginal discharge can be observed and it takes on the appearance of cottage cheese

There are numerous factors on why a vaginal infection appears and all these factors lead to an imbalance in the vaginas pH. When the vaginas acidity is altered, then you will have higher chances of acquiring a vaginal yeast infection. These factors that will be mentioned below all contribute to your chances of getting an infection although not always.

Frequent use of antibiotics
Taking medicines that contain steroids
During pregnancy
Stress
Sickness
High sugar in the diet
Under birth control pills
During menstruation

Inspite of all the factors listed above, a woman can still be able to prevent a yeast infection from occurring. If youre used to practicing douching then maybe its time to give it a rest. Douching will only destroy the normal flora of your vagina increasing your chances to getting a vaginal thrush.

Also, make it a point to avoid bubble baths, scented vaginal washes and tampons. These can also contribute to further irritation. Avoid using overly tight undergarments and choose those that fit you just well making sure that its fabric is made out of cotton. After a tough workout, make sure that you change clothes immediately because a moist environment encourages the yeast to thrive.
