When you make a domain name change, is a time to consider how to go about changing the name of your domain with the least damage. You want to choose a name that will make a lasting impression on your customers and your prospects so that it is easy to remember. You might also consider a domain that is SEO friendly which will also give you the advantage of growth. These are factors your need to consider when switching your domain.

If you have built a large number of visits to your website, then you might like to stick with your old domain name. But, if you do choose to change the domain name you might consider putting a permanent 301 redirect in place of your old domain which will direct customers and prospects to your new website. This will say that your site has moved and direct the interested parties to your new site without you having to lose traffic.

For marketers it can be a tremendous advantage as it will keep your rankings where they should be without you losing traffic. If you want only a temporary redirect then you will use a 302 redirect. Both are extremely effective when it comes to not losing traffic. For the marketer, it is necessary to have something in place that will not allow you to miss traffic; especially with a domain name change. If visitor that visits your old website it will be a lost hit if there is no redirect on the site.

When you have built traffic to your website that has you listed high in the rankings, the last thing you want to do is take a chance with that rankings. Therefore, remember, to allow enough time for the new site to take over completely. You will want to have the redirect in place for at least several months. This means your traffic will be directed to the right place until they can get used to the new website address.
