How Do I Make A Tutu Tonight?

By:

Accessorizing a leotard with a tutu is a simple way to achieve an impressive overall look. From fun attire for frolicking at dance class to a creative and custom costume, the possibilities are endless! Even when time is sparse, no need to fret. A classic tutu can be envisioned, designed and made in a single evening.

First, select the color desired for the tutu. Any combination or number of colors can be used. Purchase tulle in the selected color scheme, as well as a thin piece of elastic long enough to measure around the waist. Along with a pair of scissors, these are the main components used in creating this coveted frilly embellishment. Next, measure the required length of elastic to wrap around the waist and cut. The ends of the elastic can be hand sewn together with a couple of easy stitches to secure the waistband which will serve as the foundation for the tutu. If a no-sew garment is desired, use a small safety pin to secure the ends of the elastic. Strips of tulle will be tied around this waistband to complete the finished product.

Finally, cut strips of tulle into the length desired for the tutu. Tie each strip around the elastic waistband, sliding each one as close as possible to the previous piece. If using multiple colors, more than one strip of each color can be placed together to enhance or highlight a specific color. When tying strips, evenly arrange the strip with the elastic band in the middle of the strip so a clean line will be created when tied as to hide the elastic band itself. Customized tutus add pizazz to birthday attire, dance wear and a casual ensemble of a t-shirt and leggings.

Some amazing and unique costumes cheaply created using the tutu pattern above include: firecracker or rocket, octopus, jellyfish, sunburst and firework. To achieve such a costume add to the design with a basic leotard adorned with embellishments in order to achieve the desired theme. For example, perhaps a firecracker or rocket insists on a red, yellow and orange tutu to represent the flames and is nicely complimented with a plain silver leotard. Complete the total look with a pair of tights in one of the flame colors to easily blend. A long, pink and peach tutu in variegated long lengths transforms itself into a jellyfish. With a set of arm bands incorporating a few strands of leftover tulle, the overall look can be dramatic when danced on stage.
