How Do I Get Unstuck?

By:

Do you find yourself dissatisfied with the direction of your career or personal life? Are you finding it more and more difficult to get out of bed in the morning? Do you have less exuberance for your friends, family and colleagues? If you feel like this youre not alone and dont worry medication isnt always the answer.

Todays economic climate brings out many of these feelings that have been just under the surface when times were good. We like to say in business that revenue hides all evils and this statement couldnt be more true! Many experts agree that the economic meltdown began with the housing market crashing and this created a domino effect across domestic and international markets uncovering hidden abuses and dangerous financial instruments. Now segue this last sentence to your life; has the financial meltdown uncovered poor habits, job dissatisfaction and a personal life a drift? For many the answer is yes!

So what are you to do? My good friend Tom Griffith asks his clients this question; If money was no obstacle what would you be doing with your life? This is spot on question and one that is so simple, but most of us have never taken the time to ask it of ourselves. We graduate high school and maybe go on to college, or maybe we go right to work, but most have never asked; Whats my purpose and what fulfills me? How many of us are actually in a field that we studied in college or in our post graduate education? Im not! I went to college to study pre-medical sciences and left with that major, but now Im in the business world. When I entered business I looked for a pay check and advancement, but not if I loved where I worked, who I worked for and was I making a difference. Of course, I no longer conduct my life this way. I make sure that when I take on an engagement that I can make a difference, that it is in line with my purpose, and that I am fulfilled and by asking these questions I ensure my success and that of those around me.

Now its your turn. Ask yourself what gives you tremendous passion and excitement. Think about when you were kid out playing a sport, one that you loved, and it never got old or felt like work. I remember as a young teenager my love of tennis. I would get home from school and ride 5 miles each way to the indoor tennis courts no matter what the weather. One day I came home with huge blister along the palm of my hand from playing. I showed my father and he asked why I didnt stop, and I answered because I love to play. And, truth be told, I was only an average player, but it was being average that made me love the game because with every new stroke I had the opportunity to improve and isnt that what life is ultimately about?

Go, be alone somewhere and ask yourself if money wasnt an obstacle what would I do with my life? What would make me jump out of bed in the morning? It may not be a change in your career, but rather a new direction or new market segment that you always wanted to pursue. Maybe its sitting down with a loved one and clearing the air of long held resentment, or maybe its discontinuing relationships that youve tried to make work, but the other party and you dont share the same values. Whatever it is the power to get unstuck is within you not outside you. It is your responsibility to dig deep, go deep and discover what you were meant to do and how you were meant to contribute to those around you.

When you finally decide to dig into what has you stuck use these four bullets as your starting point and ask if your challenge lays within one or all of these areas.
1. Do you have Self-Limiting Beliefs?

2. Do you have a lack of Money or Scarcity Mentality?

3. Are you Blindly Following Industry Norms?

4.Are you Aimlessly Following Authority figures without question?

After going deep on the above points now ask yourself where did these beliefs originate from so you can see how they have impacted your thought process and then let them go to create your own truth. Now, with your new beliefs and putting aside all man made obstacles, such as money, ask yourself what fulfills you and what gives you passion?

Now go out and create a plan to get there!
