How Do I Fix Or Correct Dyed Hair That's Too Dark?

By:

Hi, I'm Jasen James, a professional hair colorist and your HairColorHelper. I'm here to answer your questions about coloring your hair at home. Many brunettes of all shades, and even women with black hair, wonder how they can fix dyed hair that's come out too dark.

Even if you take every precaution about selecting your hair color, you may get a little surprise in the mirror with hair that's too dark. Don't panic! No need to burn the house down! It's going to be all right.

My advice isn't an all-out color correction, but more of a tweaking. I prefer removing dark hair color in small steps -- this way you have more control over the results. To start fading the unwanted darkness, put aside your color-safe shampoo and pick up a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos are made to strip chemical deposits from the hair and hair color is a chemical, right? There are many brands available at the drugstore at all price levels.

When shampooing, this is one time you can feel free to wash and rinse in all the hot water you want. It might take a few shampoos to see a difference, but you will in within a week's time. Don't skip the conditioner! This is very important, as daily use of a clarifying shampoo can be a little tough on your hair.

You can also lighten your hair with a hot oil treatment. Apply it all over, cover your hair with a plastic bag and aim a hair dryer at your head for 15 minutes. The heat will help remove some of the color. You might go up half a shade or even a full shade lighter. And you'll have the added bonus of a deep conditioning treatment.
