How Do Fire Doors Protect Your Home?

Specified in Building Regulations for a variety of dwellings, fire doors serve as passive fire protection. These specialty products are vital in containing a fire and preventing it from spreading quickly into your homes living space. Fire doors are used in flats and office buildings as a way to move through fire rated walls, but for most residential applications they are installed between the garage and the living space. By remaining strong even during a fire, these doors give those inside the home more time to escape to safety.

Materials Are What Makes a Difference
The materials in fire doors make it possible for this product to resist the flames. Several materials combine together to create a certain amount of resistance to the heat and gases present during a fire. Wood and steel come together with vermiculite and gypsum to form a product that will hold strong for a specified amount of time.

The strength created by the combination of materials and engineering on this door will create a safer atmosphere for those on the other side of the door. Gases and smoke that move ahead of the actual flames are the greatest danger for those inside the home. With a full seal and solid construction, fire doors hold back those gases for a time. They also keep the flames at bay. By containing the fire within a certain area, fire doors give fire fighters a better chance to arrive at the site.

Testing Is What Counts
Once fire doors are designed and a prototype is constructed by the door manufacturer that product is then taken to a third party testing centre where industry specified tests are conducted. These procedures will find out how well and for how long the door stands up to flames, heat and gases. Based on the findings of these tests, a fire door is then rated. Categories include the most commonly found FD30, which offers 30 minutes of protection from fire, and FD60, which increases that protection to 60 minutes. There are also door sets with FD90 ratings.

All properly tested and categorized fire doors are labelled for quick reference. You can assume that a door is not certified unless you can see that label or recognize an alternative marking. Displayed either on the top of the door as a label or on the door jamb as a colour coded peg, these markings indicate the rated fire resistance level of the door.
