How Do Couriers Arrive At Their Prices For A Delivery?

By:

When you do business with any Detroit courier service you might be confused about how they come to the figures that they charge you for any given shipment. This is something that is calculated using a variety of different figures and formulas that the courier will have in place in order to arrive at your final billed amount. All calculations start with a base rate though that is applied to every delivery. This is the amount that means a basic delivery with a certain mileage, usually twenty to thirty miles, from the central location in which the courier is located.

Distance is always going to be one of the most important factors when it comes time for a courier to decide on how much to charge for any given shipment. For any distance that goes outside the base area determined by the courier company, there is likely going to be a charge that is passed on a rate per mile. Not all companies follow this exact model though, and some use a zone system, such as going from a city to a certain suburb, to asses a flat addition to the base rate.

After the distance that the courier is going to have to travel has been figured into the rate, the next consideration is the package itself. Obviously, size and weight are the primary considerations here. These can both greatly affect the rate that is charged because the bigger and larger any given package is, the larger a vehicle is required to move the shipment, as well as there being less room in the vehicle for shipment from other clients of the company. The rate will also increase if there is any need for special trailers, equipment, or handling equipment to be employed to move the cargo in question.

There are many other considerations which can also add extra fees onto a shipment, such as afterhours fees, and it can be a worry to not know how much your final bill might be assessed at, which is why there are laws requiring courier companies to fully disclose all of their fees if requested to by a customer. If you're shipping an order with anything out of the ordinary about the package, when, or where you're shipping it too, you may want to discuss beforehand any fees or surcharges that will be applied to the order to avoid any nasty surprises later on.
