How Can String Algae Grow And Be Removed

By:

The term String Algae was coined because this form of plant really does replicate that of string, made up from really fine strands which is why some filtration systems are unable to remove the pest. It can also be found in indoors aquariums of all sizes, generally more noticeable in larger ones.

There are many reasons why this form appears, one of them is the fact that there may be too much light penetrating into the water. The easy solution for an indoor tank is to move it away from any sunny patches or to monitor the light by putting up a shield or drawing the curtains.

If you have not already built your outdoors water feature you can decide to do so in a shaded area such as next to a wall. However, if the pond is already in your garden you can not pick it up and move it! One idea is to plant some large lilies and their leaves will create more shade but the sunlight will still be able to get through.

Another suggestion is to look into buying some pond dye, this acts in a similar way to sun cream protection for humans, the chemicals in the product prevent sunrays from entering the water. Therefore this organisms growth is stunted, be aware that you may need to remove any existing algae before using this dye. Do not worry about any fish in the pond; it is completely harmless to animals.

Another cause might be that the flow in either your outdoor or indoor structure may be too slow or non-existent. When the water moves quickly the algae has less opportunity to grow into big clumps, it may still appear but often ends up being washed away. Many books are available to help you to adjust this.

The worst form to have in your pond is filamentous string algae, this spreads across the area with exceptional speed. It can make your beautiful ornamental water feature look hideous and dull overnight. Normally this type can be found at the bottom of your pond or aquarium and it starts off being more noticeable in areas which are not as deep, if untreated it can grow to the top.

Too much organic waste in the water, such as fish muck, fish food and dead leaves, can feed the pest and cause rapid growth. You need to check your filtration system because it should help to remove these products. There are chemicals available, which are harmless to your fish and other plants, which will break down and destroy this organic matter, causing the algae to starve.

Some string algae can be remove manually by yourself but if you have a large amount this will not be feasible. Research, by using books or the internet or asking experts in garden centres, the best techniques for destroying this plant as there is a wealth of information available. Conducting a thorough search may be time consuming but worth it in the long run.
