How Can An Interior Designer Narrow Down Client Requirements: 3 Steps

By:

In order to succeed as an interior designer, you must see eye to eye with your client. The client is your bread and butter, and if he is not satisfied with the work, or if you cannot gauge what his requirements are, your career as an interior decorator may be short. Following are some tips that can help you read the clients mind.

*LISTEN!

Usually a client will tell you his requirements, but there are cases where the clients themselves are of two minds, as the say goes, regarding a particular design or material. It pays to listen to your client! Even when the client is ambiguous with matters pertaining to design, an interior decorator must listen carefully to whatever he says. Get a brief idea of the picture a client has in his head and make your designs based on that.

Listening to your client will also give you certain details which may not be mentioned by him. For example, in the course of a conversation, a client may unknowingly state his favorite color or pattern or material. These details will help you, as an interior decorator to work accordingly in order to make the client happy.

*An organized plan:

A client will appreciate the fact that you as an interior designer are organized in your work. You must realize that the client is handing over the makeover of an area which he will see almost every day. In such a case, if you are organized and the designs you make are organized, it gives a sense of relief to the client. He realizes that he is in the right hands and is thus at ease. Make an organized floor plan or design to convey the message to the client that you are capable of your work and he has nothing to fret about. After all, if the client is happy, he may even stretch the budget a bit!

*Overall considerations:

Jumping in with both feet is something an interior designer must never do. When you as an interior designer are working on a design, the minute details must be taken into consideration. If you prepare a design without considering the environmental aspects like land or physical and structural aspects like plumbing, you're on a sure short road to disaster.

As an interior designer, you must work towards client satisfaction. These few steps and some common sense on your side will determine your reputation and skill as an interior designer!
