How Business Cards Can Help Weather The Economic Gloom

By:

Making the right impression in the world of business has never been more important. While people continue to tighten their belts in an effort to save money and make every penny count it's vitally important to stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons. This is particularly pertinent to small businesses or people who work on a freelance basis.

As a general rule large businesses are the ones that will be able to weather any stormy economic conditions. This isn't always the case of course but more big businesses survive a crisis than do not and more large businesses are able to cope with the challenges of a downturn than their smaller counterparts.

The reason this happens is simple, they have the resources behind them. They can always find areas that can be downsized or even closed and any cost cutting measures usually give them breathing space. In this respect they are much better positioned than smaller businesses to come out of a financial slump than most. These are luxuries that a small business or business person does not have available to them. So what can they do?

For many small businesses the first reaction when faced with difficult conditions that do not seem to have any sign of improving is to stop all activities that do not seem to be directly bringing in money in an attempt to keep down costs. It rarely works and can do more harm than good.

Facing up to the fact that times are tough and things are not going to get better any time soon is the first step to making all the right moves to protect your small business and make sure that you do all you can to stay in the game. The most important thing to do is maintain your profile. When everybody is suffering economically the best you can do is remain in the minds of potential customers. This way you will be first in line when people do have money to spend.

There are many ways to maintain your profile on a budget and all are worth investigating to see which best suits you and your business. Here are three things that can be used by most people to keep your business in the thoughts of potential customers, even when they are not buying anything from you.

Business cards - This is perhaps the simplest, yet most cost effective, way to advertise yourself. Business cards are cheap to produce and can say a lot about you without demanding anything back. There are now many companies that offer to design the cards free of charge making it an even better idea. The business card is also a way of introducing yourself and making an impression so give it some thought. Give it some personality with a graphic or picture and some memorable text. It has been proven that we are more likely to remember people who shake our hands when we meet them. Think of a business card as an introductory handshake.

Website - Building your own website is now quite a straightforward task and can be achieved by most people who can operate a mouse and keyboard; that's everyone then. If you still don't fancy it a simple website can be paid for at a small cost. It's a great way to advertise your business, show previous jobs and clients and highlight your strengths. If you get a website built you could include the address on your business card.

Email - This can be linked to your website if you have one but doesn't have to be. Build up a list of clients and potential clients email addresses and keep in regular contact with them. Send out a weekly or monthly email detailing what you are doing at the moment. Make it entertaining and informative.

If you follow simple steps like these; handing out a business car, emailing clients and keeping your profile alive with a website you will be better placed than most one the economic clouds have shifted.
