How Big Spills Or Small Spills Can Cause Water Damage And Mold

By:

If you have a home where children live, you can have spills of some kind going on almost any day. These kinds of spills are usually a cup of milk or juice. Generally they are wiped up fairly quickly if you see them when they happen. Bigger spills can also be caused by a bathtub or sink overflowing, dripping water off of your body when you get out of the tub or shower, when you open the dishwasher at the wrong time, from leaking water pipes, or even using too much water when you mop or shampoo carpets. It can cause damage to the floor, walls, and other places where the water can settle. The smallest amount of water can cause damage just like a big spill can.

Water can seep into cracks in the floor and underneath the baseboards around the edges of the floor. Water can soak deep into the fibers of carpet and penetrate through the padding into the sub-flooring beneath it. It can cause water damage and even mold to attack your home. The damages can be anything from minor to severe depending on the size of the water spot and how long it stays wet. It can cost you a lot of money to make repairs and get rid of the damages.

Even though spills made by you or your children are usually cleaned up promptly, damages can from them if they are not. If it is not cleaned up right away it can set in and cause rotting and mold too if it does not dry quickly on its own. The mold can set in within 48 hours if it is on a surface that it can feed on like carpet, paper, or wood. Even water spills can cause stains sometimes just like juices, coffee, or te can depending on what it gets on. Table rings are common when people sit down cups or glasses on furniture. They can be very hard to get out with out damaging the area more. If a spill happens on the carpet, you need make sure you suck out all of the water or other liquid from the padding and clean it well and dry it thoroughly.

If a spill gets on wood floors, you need to mop it up with a towel or a dry mop so the water will not soak in the wood. Most wood floors are protected with some sort of sealant on the top, but this wears down over time and staining can still occur. There are also protective solutions that you can have put on your carpets or do yourself after they are cleaned that will help to prevent stains from ruining the fibers. Always use an absorbent bath mat in your bathroom to help keep water off the floor in there. Rubber backed mats will keep the water from soaking through to the floor.
