How Are Prices For Courier Shipments Calculated?

By:

Every courier company is going to have their own prices, and the variance between the prices of competing couriers is one of the major factors which play into a person's decision into which company they want to do business with. Something that is overlooked by a majority of people though, is that even though the final prices are going to be very different, most of the 3pl providers which work in the industry actually have a similar way of coming up with the final pricing that they offer to their customers.

Usually, the size and the weight of your package are going to be part of the base calculation that is used to come up with the rate that you're going to be charged for your shipping. That is because unless you're hiring a courier on a FTL basis (in which case pricing will be calculated differently anyway) then you're only going to be paying for a portion of the vehicle that you're shipping in. The weight and size of the shipment help the courier to assess how much of that vehicle you are consuming.

The next most important factor in the price is going to be how far you're shipping. Of all the factors at play here, this may be the most important. That is because this essentially represents the amount of time that the courier is going to be working for you. Of the actual expenses that are faced on every delivery, the time invested by their staff and equipment is certainly the largest of the expenses that the courier has to face, which is why this is an important part of their pricing format.

Once the basis price is arrived at, it will be adjusted based on what delivery option you have selected. Most courier companies have many different options that you can select from in terms of how fast you want your delivery completed. You will be charged more the faster you want your shipment delivered. It takes more resources to make a faster delivery, and trucks which are making deliveries like one hour or same day shipping are seldom as full as those which can wait a few days to plan an optimum route, making each product shipped less profitable for the courier which is another reason the individual prices are higher. Taxes and any additional surcharges will then be added to the bill to come to the final amount that you are going to owe them.
