How Are Packing Trays Created?

By:

Packing trays are used in every part of our life. Every snack item, medicine, cosmetic and electronic item we use is covered using transparent or opaque packing trays. They are formed through thermoforming which involves several complex procedures.

1. The first step in thermoforming process is clamping the plastic sheet in the tray. It is then heated to make it elastic and stretchable. Air pressure or other forms of natural heating sources are used to increase the temperature.

2. The plastic mold is pressed on the hot, stretched sheet in the second step. Usually only one side of the mold is used to create the shape. The mold is enclosed in the plastic on all sides only in rare occasions.

3. The set up is allowed to cool for several hours. Once the mold is removed, the plastic sheet surrounding the required shape is cut out. Several shapes are carved in one single sheet. The excess plastic in between and around them are removed and used to create new items.

4. There are several types of thermoforming. Depending upon the thickness of the plastic sheets used we can broadly classify the process into thin-gauge and heavy-gauge. If the sheet is thinner than 1.5mm it is comes under thin-gauge category. Very thin plastic sheets are pressed as rolls instead of sheets. Their by product is known as foil. They are used extensively in medical packaging and packing trays covering the electronic items.

5. Very thick sheets are cut into small pieces and loaded into the heating trays manually. They are stacked one upon other and special equipment is required to mold them. Thermoforming is also classified based on the way the sheets are fed into the machine. Some are fed into as plates and others are pushed into the machines as rollers. Sometimes, several sheets are stacked one upon another in the heating tray.

Packing trays created using these methods are used for several purposes. Light-Gauge thermoformed products are used to create disposable food covers and used mainly in packaging. Heavy-Gauge thermoformed packing trays are used to keep the industrial items safe.

They are used to create furniture and various sized storages too. Millions of products can be produced at a stretch at very low cost. The finished products can be dyed in various colors, cut, pierced, bent and shaped further according to the consumer necessity. Hence, packing trays produced through thermoforming are preferred globally by the food producers and various other industries.
