How And Where Flood Water Can Happen

By:

Any time you have water standing that will cover your feet, it can be considered flood water. It can happen at any time in almost any place. If there is heavy rainfall in a certain area and the water is standing, it can overflow a nearby creek or river and cause a neighboring city or town to flood as well.

Any place where there is a lot of snow is prone to flooding. When this snow melts or when it melts too fast, it can cause some flooding. If the snow is in a creek, there are a lot of ice jams. This can cause the creek water to raise further down the stream, and this will most surely cause this creek or stream to flood. These incidents usually happen after the long winter months and spring is around the corner. Spring is usually the worst season for floods, but summer is also sometimes just as bad.

If you live near a stream, creek, river, lake, or even the ocean you most likely will have all kinds of cases of flooding from small puddles to very bad floods. Even a small stream can make water get up to your home or even in your basement. These are called flash floods because they will come on very fast and will usually go back down just as fast. Any flood water can knock you off your feet and carry you for miles away.

If you see flood water on the road ahead of your car, don't try to drive through it because you don't have any control of this water, and it can take you and your car into some place you don't want to be. If the water keeps getting higher, you could be trapped in your car and you might not get out alive. Always remember that all flood waters are dangerous and any amount of water can kill you.

If you can be caught up in this water, remember that anything can also be in this water. This may include trees, limbs, cars, and all different kinds of animals. Not all of these animals like people and might attack if given the chance. Even animals that you know, like your neighbor's dog, can become your worst enemy because they are in a scary situation and are just as scared as you are.

Whenever there is a warning of flooding in your area, the best idea would be to evacuate your home and the city as soon as possible. Gather up all important documents, some clothing and food, and of course your family and leave immediately.
