Housetraining A Dog. Know The Fundamental

By:

If dogs were to left with their devices, certainly they would chew, dig and bark for entertainment and then no doubt highlight a few areas of their living space with sprinkles of urine, in much the same way we decorate by hanging pictures. Consequently, when we ask a dog to live with us, we must teach her where she may dig, where she may perform her toilet duties, what she may chew and when she may bark.

After all, when left at home alone for many hours, we cannot expect the dog to amuse herself by completing crosswords or watching the soaps on TV. Also, it would be decidedly unfair to keep the house rules a secret from the dog, and then get angry and punish the poor critter for inevitably transgressing rules she did not even know existed.

Remember that without adequate education and guidance, the dog will forced to establish her own rules or doggy rules, and most probably will be at odds with the owner's view of domestic living.

Since most problems develop during the first few days the dog is at home, prospective dog owners must be certain they are quite clear about the principles of housetraining before they get a dog.

Early misbehaviors quickly become established as the status quo, becoming firmly entrenched as hard to break bad habits, which set the precedent for years to come. Make sure to teach your dog good habits right from the start.

Good habits are just as hard to break as bad ones. Ideally, when a new dog comes home, try to rearrange for someone to be present as much as possible during the first few days for adult dogs or weeks for puppies.

With only a little forethought, it is surprisingly easy to find a puppy sitter, such as a retired person, who would be willing to eat from your refrigerator and watch your television while keeping an eye on the newcomer to encourage the dog to play with chew toys and to ensure she goes outside on a regular basis.
