Siding is sold in hundreds of different colors. Learn more about the latest trends in house siding colors and what colors might work best for your area.

Homeowners have literally hundreds of options when it comes to house siding colors. The Vinyl Siding Institute has certified 354 different colors through its Product Certification Program, and color is the most important factor in deciding which product to purchase, the Color Marketing Group reports. About 85 percent of consumers base their purchases on color.

Regional and national trends in home siding colors
Homeowners in many parts of the country often make their decisions about house siding colors based on regional geography. For instance, softer earth tones, though popular throughout the U.S., are an especially good fit in areas with a lot of brown in the topography, such as many parts of New Mexico, California, Arizona and Nevada. Brighter colors can often be found throughout sub-tropical Florida, while various shades of green are a natural fit in the Pacific Northwest.

To make it easier, James Hardie, a leading manufacturer in fiber cement siding, breaks down North America into 10 separate regions. James Hardie has created 20 different color tones to match up with the existing architecture and natural hues of each region.

Home remodelers also are finding that many homeowners today prefer a mix-and-match look. It is pretty common to mix different color patterns along with varying siding styles to give your home a very distinctive look and style. For example, some homeowners have blended horizontal or lap siding with shake or board-and-batten siding in gable-ends and peaks.

Because siding colors can last for such a long time, it takes a long time for color trends in house siding to emerge, says Color Services & Associates of Wonder Lake, Illinois. Darker colors also are an emerging trend, says Ply Gem, a manufacturer of many aluminum and vinyl siding products, because better production methods are used ensure the longevity of darker colors.
One of the advantages of installing wood, fiber cement, or stucco siding on your home is that these siding materials can be painted with almost any color. This doesn't mean that selecting the best color for your home is going to be easy, but at least you have a broad spectrum of colors to choose from.

Clearly, there are a lot of interesting trends among homeowner decisions and manufacturer's products. These are all things important to consider when choosing a color of siding for your home.
