Horse Training Tips-how To Load And Unload Your Horse Into A Trailer

By:

Just like everything else, when it comes to training you horse to get into and out of a trailer, the key things to remember are patience, repetition and reward. Here are some very simple horse training tips for trailer loading and unloading:

1. Bring your horse near the trailer. Let him look inside and check it out. If your horse remains calm, give him some words of praise and move on to the next step. If he does not stand calmly beside the trailer, keep doing this until you can get him to stand calmly.

2. Next, put him on a lunge line, and walk him around near the entrance to the trailer. Practice making him walk and stop, using the same words as when you are ground training. Walk and whoa or whatever cues you use. Reward your horse every time he follows your commands.

3. Lead your horse to the entrance of the trailer. Ask him to walk into the trailer. Guide him, but do not walk ahead of him. Stay to the side because you might get hurt. If he is still calm at this point, gently back him out of the trailer. If you cannot get him to walk into the trailer on his own, keep trying. Remember, a key horse training tip is patience! He may walk in a few steps, then back out again. Thats okay. Just let him do it and try again. Make sure you reward whenever he follows your instructions.

4. Practice going in, staying inside for a few seconds, and then backing out. You can gradually increase the time inside the trailer to a few minutes at a stretch.

With luck, in a few days you will easily get him in and out of a trailer, and ready to go to the next competition!
