Horse Training Considerations for the Horse Owner

By: Steve D Evans

Horse training is a tough and physically demanding task and profession for a man or a woman. Many enjoy it greatly and will tell you that it is a mental game played in a very physical way between trainer and horse. The best trainers enjoy the mental challenge between horse and trainer.

If you intend to train your own horse you must appreciate the horse training is a process that involves much more than just giving instruction to your animal, followed by a reward. Properly teaching your charge how to follow your commands, each and every time involves building a strong relationship with them.

Horse training is dangerous. Self evidently the steed you train will not want to accept your commands at times, and the horse may intentionally seek to throw you from his/her back. Horse training starts with teaching your horse and most importantly yourself the basic foundation skills.

But, don't let this put you off, horse training isn't all that hard once you start getting into it under expert guidance. So, get into it with an expert. Many of the best courses today use an eclectic approach, by providing what is known as “Cross Training”. This is a method that borrows from all approaches to build solid foundation skills for all riding disciplines.

Horse training is always about asking for something about the horse to get better. For example, when in the saddle, either the horse stays going the same speed, or his nose stays bent to the inside rail, or he softens up; something has got to get better and it will with expert horse training.

Training horses is an art, not a science. Find out what works successfully for you in your situation most of the time. Horse training courses also available for riders/horses wishing to further their education. Sometimes several horses for sale are offered while still currently in training. Take great care when buying that you know what degree of training you future horse has been given. If you are unsure about your needs in a horse take an expert to help you buy, and do spend that additional money on veterinary checks before you buy, as well.

A horse training capability is a skill which is in demand, and has also become a substantial service business. The owner and horse trainer relationship works well when both parties take their obligations seriously. Earlier we said that horse training is dangerous, but present day courses are much safer than "breaking", for both the horse and the rider. During the old “horse breaking” process, it is always possible that the horse will at times be out of control. At such times it is quite easy for the rider to fall off or the horse itself to fall, and both are perilous and to be avoided.

Horse training is offered by most professionals based on a lesson rate, a full week of daily training sessions may be available at a rate of about $200.00 and monthly rates of $750.00 are common. Successful horse trainers can make a good profit from their activities.

Naturally, you can't train every horse exactly the same way - they are individuals and require individual attention, but there are generalities to be taken into account. Body language is a horse's first language and by understanding their body language and how our body language affects their behavior we are then better equipped to train them.

Although some horsemen continue to use rough, confrontational styles of horse breaking (as opposed to training), these methods are not as common as the Hollywood soap and film portrayals suggest, and the majority of cowboys and horsemen don't work in that way. As a horse owner you are in a sense also a horse trainer as you develop your relationship with your horse getting him/her to do the things you want.

Unfortunately, almost every good horse rider has an accident at some point during her riding career. While some riders see accidents as a part of the sport and get right back in the saddle, so to speak, other riders lose their confidence and some even experience gripping fear.

But, don't let this deter you as long as you are sensible and wear a good hat and body protector. Just remember that the joy for most is that to train a horse one actually needs to get inside the horse’s mind: a good trainer gets to know the horse as well or better than he/she knows his/her own children. Only then does the empathy start and the experience of communication with this noble breed make its own rewards.

Finally, and before you decide to pay for a horse trainer to train your young horse or pony you must check on their credentials. Find out the the history of how the trainer learned his skills and what kind of skills he or she holds.
