Is letting go always moving on?

What does it mean to let go of something or someone? Does it mean never do that thing again or see that person?
We can do this and sometimes the peace will return to our lives. What about the times that this feeling doesn’t shift? What then?
I believe the answer is in the way things feel. Is there lightness about the action? Or can we simply hold the thing or person more lightly and therefore alter the experience of that relationship?
A story comes to mind here. Recently I was looking for a dress for my son’s wedding. I searched for the perfect dress that would represent the image I wanted to portray for such an important occasion. The more I searched the further away the dress seemed to be and the more exhausted I became. I could have let go of the need to have a dress at all but going in the nude was probably not really the answer!
I just decided to hold it more lightly and not worry about it and start to do the things that I was able to easily do in the present moment. Several days later out of the blue I had the feeling to walk across the road to a shopping centre. Just inside the entrance there was a dress shop. I tried four dresses on and all of them looked great. My daughter and I had a great time trying the different dresses and I walked away with the perfect dress for the wedding.
So what has this got in common with relationships, a job or a house? Just contemplate how it would feel if we also held these things lightly and went with the flow? If we were able to completely let go of one of them maybe it would be just like finding the dress: easy. Sometimes we just can’t work things out from a logical place. So maybe letting go means to hold things lightly and trust that life will work itself out.
