SARS Response

The severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (or SARS) devastated Asia and 29 other countries around the world in 2003. The SARS breakout resulted in quarantines, hysteria, travel restrictions, and approximately 774 deaths. With direct guidance from Richard Li, PCCW rose to the aid of those affected by the outbreak by providing vital telecommunication services to medical staff, patients, and fundraisers. Additionally, Richard Li volunteered PCCW to set video conferencing allowing desperately needed communications with families for quarantined SARS victims and volunteers. Richard Li also had PCCW supply telephone medical and legal advice hotlines support for isolated patients and communities, a special story time program for children under quarantine protection, and charity fundraisers and community activists call center support.

As well as providing technical services, Richard Li and PCCW combined to donate $1 million to the SARS victims' Business Community Relief Fund. In his annual report for the company, Richard Li praised PCCW employees for their contribution in the fight against SARS in Hong Kong. Richard Li further stated his pride in PCCW's people for serving the community with the company in efforts to ease the economic and social hardships, noting that many gave up their free time to help out as volunteers.
