Homes Can Offer New Ways Of Power Generation With Solar Panels

By:

There is a growing trend towards environmentally friendly home technologies. This offshoot of the broader green living movement offers a number of improvements you can make which are not only good for the planet, but will save you money in the long run. Today's green technologies offer brilliant solutions to problems of home thermal efficiency, heating and cooling systems, and energy consumption. By properly applying these technologies you can minimize your carbon footprint, and make enormous strides towards living off the grid. The most significant of these advances can be found in home solar technology. While photovoltaic technology has existed for a rather long time now, in recent years we have discovered ways to make them far more efficient, and greatly reduced production costs. As such, it is now practical to give your house solar panels. While the initial set up of this system can still be somewhat cost prohibitive, if you live in an area that has enough sunny days in the year, the cells can pay for themselves surprisingly quickly, especially if they are producing more energy than you are using, and are feeding it back into the power grid.

For those of you who own a moderately large chunk of land, there is a system available that can replace your standard heating and cooling devices with a much more energy efficient system. The installation of a ground source heat pump involves running a length of piping in the ground, at a great enough depth (generally in the area of thirty feet) that the ground temperature is more or less constant throughout the year. This piping is then used as an area from which to import heat, or an area to which to export heat. Your home can also greatly benefit from general improvements on thermal design, thought in many cases these design elements are extensive enough that it is far more practical to plan a new homes construction around them rather than to attempt to implement their use into a home remodel. These design elements include things like the incorporation of a large number of south facing windows, which open towards a wall of stone. The windows can then be equipped with heavy, thermally sound shutters, which are automated to close off after the sun goes down and when the outside conditions are such that the heating system's computer deems it necessary to close them off in order to help the home reach a desired temperature.
