There are several brilliant ideas for a home based business. In order to be successful at it, you need to choose one among your interests and hobbies. If you have a knack in cooking and enjoy doing it, then starting your own catering business can be great for you.

To start, list down all dishes and recipes you are confident about. In food business, there are three categories for food, namely, appetizers, main course, and desserts. The recipes you know on each category must be quite a few, so customers will have more choices as they look over your menu.

Schedule a time to cook the recipes on your menu, and then take photographs of it from different angles. Design your menu to feature the sumptuous photos of your recipes. Your portfolio should also be a compilation of your master recipes.

Plan your budget. You need to set aside money to buy the necessary equipment and tools for your home based business. From ingredients to food container, and from utensils to coffee maker and juice mixer--everything must be prepared. If you have spare materials in your kitchen, use it for your business.

Prepare different packages for your catering business. Each package must be complete with appetizers, main dishes, desserts and hot and cold beverages. Your package must be varied; start from a minimum of three main courses.

Set an individual price for each menu so that when your customers would like to add a dish, they will have an idea on the additional costs. Moreover, welcome small groups of clients. Catering services are no longer confined to dinner and lunch for parties and conferences.

For your catering home based business, you can also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to office workers, teachers and college students. Add to your market the construction workers in areas where construction work is in progress. In order to win the market you are targeting, offer free taste of your bestseller recipes.

Your marketing strategies should be strong. Besides having business cards, advertise your catering business on the internet. There are several websites that offer free posting on their classified ads. If you have an account on social media networking, you can use them to announce about your catering business.

You can also channel your marketing strategies through the features of your social network account, and publish few photos of your recipes. Advertising on the ads section of the local newspapers is also a good option but the costs can be expensive.

Resourcefulness and creativity can prompt you to make flyers about your home based business. you can request the store managers or bakeshop owners to allow you to setup a "pick-one" container near the counter so people can get your flyer.

In some States, business permit and health certification may not be a requirement. Regardless if your State allows you to operate home based business without permit, it is best if you have them.

Particularly important is your health certificate issued by the Health Department. Having it guarantees that your foods are prepared with utmost care and cleanliness.
