Home Wind Turbine: Do They Work In Cities?

By:

The home wind turbine is a terrific alternative for homeowners most everywhere. While they are a strong alternative to utility-bought power, but do they work well in cities?

We all know and realize that fossil fuel power sources are a dying breed. While in the past we could count on getting all of our power from coal or from natural gas, those supplies are shrinking fast and we really don't have a choice but to use renewable resources at least in the near-term. If someone is in their basement developing an alternative to renewable resources we don't know about it yet.
The real question though is will a wind turbine project work everywhere? No matter how badly we would like this to be the case, it is simply unlikely to be so anytime soon even though the technology is improving at a rapid rate and wind turbines will operate at lower and lower speeds as time goes on.

This is where home wind turbine projects will work best now...

Roofs in cities - by many estimations, roofs in cities could supply a tremendous amount of electricity to urban dwellers. There is an unbelievable amount of residential and commercial roof real estate in this country that is not being used now. Roofs are not ideal for when production but especially in big cities where the majority of the available space will be on the roof, they can be a very strong option. Roofs have problematic wind flow but that chaos can be channeled into a very good direction if you use a vertical axis wind turbine for such a project.

Towers - This is probably the majority of locations that use wind. Large wind farms always have wind turbines mounted on towers. Also, your home wind turbine will perform best if mounted on the tower as well. That is because the strongest winds are always at least 30 feet above the height of the trees or buildings.

Chimneys - This is an emerging location for the home wind turbine kit market. There are a number of new devices that are coming out that are aesthetically matching the roof environment and even look like a part of the chimney. So you can make power on your roof and have it be attractive by locating the home wind turbine on your chimney or near it.

In conclusion, the roof is an excellent place for the home wind turbine. Even more so in large cities where there is really no choice but to mount a wind turbine on the roof.
