Home Security While You Are Away

By:

According the FBI statistics, a home break in occurs every fifteen seconds. Although they are frequently happening, they are also easy to prevent. Simply by taking a few steps to ensure safety for you, your home, and your family, you can hopefully prevent becoming a victim and a FBI statistic. It is important to ensure home security in order to help prevent possible criminal activity.

The majority of home burglars are not professionals. They are either adolescents or desperate individuals looking to make a few bucks. Their ideal target is an unoccupied house with easy access and low visibility. It is important to consider these factors when installing home security. You have to leave the house at some point, so certain precautions must be made in order to protect your house while you are gone.

Installing a home alarm is the smartest option when trying to keep your house well guarded while you are away from home. An alarm offers protection by immediately alerting authorities upon a possible intrusion. Because the most criminals are amateurs, they could even possibly be scared away simply by hearing the alarm sound. Chances are it will at least alert the neighbors who might be able to assist you or your house in the case of an emergency.

In addition to installing a home alarm system to protect your belongings while you are away, another great tip is to make it seem like the house is not unoccupied. Automatic times for lights outside and inside the house are cheap and very effective. Unless the burglar is watching your house all day long, they will not notice the time and schedule in which the lights are turned on. Chances are they will simply pass by, see that there are lights on and continue on in the hopes of finding an easier target.

When away, it is a good idea to have a trusted neighbor of family member not only keep an eye on your house but also collect any mail or newspaper. One of the easiest ways for a criminal to tell there is no one at home is when he or she starts to see newspapers pile up out on the front lawn. It is so often overlooked, that one would not commonly see it as any issue. However, burglars favorite house targets are those unoccupied, so make sure your house does not become the easy target by including these important measures along with your home security.

Another quick tip is to ask next door neighbors to park in your driveway while you are away. A dead give away to no one being at home is when there are no cars in the driveway at night. Although you might just park them in the garage, criminals will at least become suspicious and want to further investigate the situation.

Cell phone technology can also be a helpful tool in protecting your house while away. Criminals sometimes check to see if someone is home by making a call to the house. Have your home phone calls directly forwarded to your cell phone, so that they are under the assumption that someone is in the house. By taking these small steps, you offer better home security for your house and belongings while you are away.
