As bad as the housing market is these days, as many problems as there are with mortgage companies and the federal government and this and that, the percentage of people owning their own homes is at an all time high.

Most people probably still think that home ownership is a good investment. I am not going to argue that point. What I will tell you is that home ownership is not cheap.

After all the hustle and bustle of the closing and you get the keys to the house then it starts getting expensive. One thing that gets overlooked often is home security. It shouldn't be that way, of course. It can be expensive. If you choose an expensive system consider rolling it into your mortgage in the first place. It is something that will last forever.

Like I said, it doesn't need to be expensive. There are lots of things you can do that are cheap or free. Start by doing those.

One of the most effective things you can do for your home security is to install a home security camera or surveillance camera.
