Home Renovation Hints & Tips

By:

It is stressful when you consider renovating your home. If you do not have a plan to follow you may end up completely overspending and not renovating what you initially set out to do. This costs you money and time that you do not have and you may not get anything accomplished.

Before you begin the process of renovating your home, you may want to get a better view of what you need first. So take this opportunity to take a sit back, take a deep breath, and begin to prepare by placing everything you want to do on paper. This will help you plan out what challenges you are going to have to face as well as any problems you may encounter.

Initial drafts may be as simple as crude drawings on sketch paper. They may be as detailed as professional architectural layouts. However you decide to proceed, basic plan and design are foundational. Add to that the need for a sound financial budget. Decide how expensive or cheap you want to go. From there, you will be able to plan expenditures and decide what is the most important to you.

You must know about required permits and fees. Before starting with the renovation, make sure to have all the paperwork necessary and pay what is required. After these legalities are settled we come to two important questions What will you be doing yourself? and What will you be giving over to professionals?

A good budget will include the major expense of a sound foundation. Do not put your home in risk of collapse just to save some extra money. Needed structural repair should be prioritized. Strengthen your walls, sidings, windows, and beams. Repair or replace roofing.

As you begin renovation you need to find a way to keep up with everything and toss it in a place that can be hauled away. Just be sure to dispose of waste completely and promptly. You dont want to feel overwhelmed with renovations. Be careful with demolition. Find out how you can remove any surface that has been given a lead based coating.

For woodwork enthusiasts hands on work in carpentry is great but be sure to work within your limits. You need expertise and precision when it comes to wall projects. Window, wall, and door modifications and construction are delicate projects and you cannot afford to go wrong. Beams must be firmly supported if you are going to be putting in additional floors.

Next you will need to consider electrical work and plumbing projects. It is best to hire professionals for this line of renovations. Find contractors who will work on a centralized cooling and heating system. Soon after your ceilings and walls are exposed you may have a professional wire and or rewire electricity and layout and or redo plumbing. After all this is done you will need an inspector from your local agency check on them.

Once you have had an inspection you can begin to add insulation and drywall. You may need to hire a professional in drywalling. The professional will be in charge of hanging the sheets and applying compound. Once the compound dries they will need to sand it. This is a repeating process until the surface is as smooth as it needs to be.

For your finishing project you may want to do the floors. When you save the floors for last you lessen the chances of missing up the finished look. You will need to also do windows, siding and gutters last. You can also do any finishing work last. That includes book casing, shelves, molding and trim. Do not forget paint or wallpapering.

Once you are finished you will see a rewarding finished look as long as it was planned out. Always think about safety first and stay in your budget. Look for help as well as advice when you need it from professionals.
