What is a bursa?
A bursa is nothing more than a lubricated and fluid-filled sac. Major bursae are situated in close proximity to the tendons in large joints like the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. They function to reduce friction between moving tissues of the body by acting as a gliding surface.
What is bursitis?
Bursitis is an irritation or inflammation of the bursa. Bursitis occurs in any joint with bursa present. The most commonly affected areas are the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, and heel.
What causes bursitis
There are 3 main causes
1.Constant rubbing of a tendon over bone because of repetitive arm and shoulder movements leads to friction. This repeated friction of the bursa that can lead to inflammation and irritation. An example is repeatedly throwing a ball.
2.Compression or squashing of the bursa leads to the same irritation and inflammation. For example, you can regularly compress the bursa by sleeping on your shoulder. If you then move in your sleep you can cause bursitis. This is why if surgery is ultimately required a significant aspect will be decompression. This procedure increases the space available to the bursa and tendons.
3.Bursa can become inflamed and irritated due to infection. It is the least likely cause of shoulder bursitis.This is because infection is particularly uncommon in the bursa of the shoulder.
The shoulder joint is a complex system of muscles, tendons and ligaments, that are designed to move the arm in a number of directions. Injury to any of these parts, can cause restricted motion, pain and swelling.
The most familiar muscle groups in the shoulder are the deltoid muscle and rotator cuff. The deltoid muscle is responsible to lift your arm up and away from your body. The rotator cuff is actually made up of four muscles that are designed to allow rotation of the arm. Under the rotator cuff and above the glenohumoral joint (the ball and socket of the shoulder joint) is a large bursa sac, that separates the muscle from the joint. The purpose of the bursa, like other bursa throughout the body is to absorb shock and forces placed on the shoulder, and to allow the muscles to glide smoothly around the joint complex.
It is possible to have bursitis with other injuries of the shoulder, such as tendonitis and muscle tears. Repetitive movements seen in such sports as baseball, tennis, racquetball and volleyball are common sports with shoulder bursitis. Football is another contact type of sport that causes shoulder damage due to impact and abnormal or excessive range of motion.
Such exercises enable the cuff to recover faster from inflammation while gradually eliminating the need for anti inflammatories. This is because the rotator cuff will be more inclined to recover from inflammation naturally if properly stimulated and strengthened. A physical therapy based on internal and external rotation exercises for the rotator cuff will strengthen the cuff itself while getting rid of Bursitis or any other shoulder disorder fast and naturally.
Like all shoulder disorders, a Bursitis can afflict the sufferer for months if not properly treated. A Shoulder Bursitis treatment based on few key exercises for the rotator cuff can greatly cut down recovery times to a fraction, eliminating pain and inflammation along the way.
