Home Improvement With The Wrong Advice

By:

Have you ever had the experience of doing a home makeover while trying to get opinions from five sources who think they are the experts on the subject. I can tell you right now that I have. Everything from what colors to use to the power tools I should use became a relevant topic of debate in a short amount of time. It was for this reason that my project turned into a bit more of a ride than what I had expected.

My partner in this project was my best friend. His name is Jacob. When we started our little project we talked with his brother in law who had done some of the things we wanted to do before. We had plotted that we would first be painting the walls. The old paint was chipping and marks were on the walls which told us that active children had been at work there.

After painting, we planned to get down and tile the floors. This would require some interesting tactics. We first needed to rip the sideboards off the walls and use a metal brush to scratch the gloss off the linoleum floors. This would help the adhesive to be able to grab the floors so that the tiles could stick down. We had little blue inserted spacers that would help to keep the tiles even all along the floor. The next part was ridiculous though.

We got to some corners where we needed to cut the tiles a bit so that they would fit square. We had spoken with a man who has done tile many times before and he recommended that we could use a tool which would make a groove cut in the tile and we could make a clean break from there. This tool seemed great for simply trimming tile, but most of the cuts we were making required niches. We tried using some clippers and that turned ridiculous as well. There was no way we could get a clean cut out of that tool.

We finally gave in after hearing a dozen bits of advice. We bought a wet saw and started to cut. It worked wonders. On the second day we needed to replace the blade but luckily we knew of a supplier who could provide us with a higher quality blade. When the tiling was done we were able to put in the carpet without incident. We realized how important it had been to place the carpet first.

These types of projects can be done at home and with a bit of instruction, but be sure to listen to the right sources of information. There are many who would love to give you advice, and it may be to your disadvantage.
