Home Heating Solutions And Which Are The Best For Your Home

By:

It's only when the weather starts to get a bit colder that most of us start thinking of ways to keep ourselves and our families warm and healthy over the Winter months. I said "healthy" because poorly heated homes can play havoc with a person's well-being and health, especially if they are prone to health problems. Catching a cold is usually the last thing anyone wants. Children as well as the elderly are often more at risk when a simple chill develops into a more serious medical condition.

That is why effective home heating is so important. It not only keeps us warm and comfortable, it can also help to keep us healthy.

Systems vary and there is a wide choice on the market, but not every heat system will be suitable for every home. Individual family needs will be a factor with selecting what's best. Your decision may also take into account other factors such as:

1. What installation budget you have available
2. How old your house is
3. The size of your house
4. The number of rooms you intend to heat
5. Whether your home is well insulated (after all, it may be best to start by fixing heat loss through walls, doors, windows and floors first).
6. How much time you spend at home (will you want to run the system all day, or have it switch on automatically when you arrive home from work?)
7. Do you want instant heat?
8. Will you be wanting all-night heating or just at certain times?
9. Does the heating need to be from an environmentally friendly source?
10. How cost-efficient does it need to be?
11. Does the heat system need to be simple to operate with little maintenance?
12. How safe do you want it to be (do you have children around?)

As you can see there are a lot of factors to take into account when choosing home heating systems. Now let's look at some of the various options available.

If your home already has an open fireplace, then you might want to look at the possibility of getting the chimney cleaned and having an open fire to warm the room. Open fires are comforting to sit in front of, but they have disadvantages too. They need regular cleaning and someone needs to chop the timber, or carry the coal inside. A lot will depend on your attitude to burning fossil fuels. You might not want to do this.

Some people install modern heating systems to fit snugly into the space occupied by an old fireplace. It is worth mentioning that some heating systems produce fumes, smoke, and/or dry out the air. I remember growing up with a kerosene heater burning in the kitchen, but times have changed and there are now so many new options.

How does underfloor heating compare?

Anyone building or renovating a home should certainly consider water underfloor heating. The system requires a boiler to heat hot water which can then be circulated to radiators, baseboard units, or to radiant heat tubes positioned under the floor.

Boiler systems can be very efficient and the big advantage of underfloor heating is that the heat is distributed evenly around a room from the floor up. Underfloor heating is also invisible and won't take up any space. The systems are usually best operated at a low consistent temperature, rather than switching them on and off to give bursts of heat.

Are other systems worth considering?

Some home owners prefer gas fires, or electric plug-in heaters, but they can prove very expensive to run and are not necessarily the most efficient way to heat your home. Care is needed around portable heaters as they can be dangerous with young children getting burnt, or their clothing catching fire. It does happen!

Central heating is another possibility. You just need to decide how many rooms you want to heat and if you want a consistent temperature in each room.

What are the first steps to choosing the right home heating system?

The first thing is not to rush into purchasing a portable heater for a room, because it may be expensive to run and not necessarily the safest option. However, if you are just renting a house or apartment, then a portable heater may be a temporary heating solution.

Find out about the various heating options and the advantages and disadvantages of each system. You'll then be well informed to make a good decision on the best system for your home.

You'll need to weigh up the initial installation cost with the ongoing costs of running each system. Also examine the heat output as well as the heat loss with each system.

Buying home heating can be costly, so it is important to make the right decision based on your needs. Sometimes it pays to invest a little more upfront for longer term benefits.

I personally prefer a house that is heated evenly rather than all the heat being focused in just one room or on one wall. Most systems are expensive, but underfloor heating works out competitively and distributes heat evenly around a room or house. That's the thing I like about water underfloor heating.

You'll now be ready to talk with some heating distributors or retailers to discuss the benefits and obtain some quotations. Knowledge is power, so you'll be able to ask the right questions and select the right heating solution for your home.
