Home Grown Goodness: How To Grow Tobacco At Home

By:

Surely you must be saying: "But, I am no farmer, I could kill an artificial houseplant!" Worry not. Tobacco growing is one of the easiest and most rewarding things that could be done. There are only a few things needed to grow tobacco. Tobacco plants, sunshine, water, and a bit of patience (though the patience is sometimes optional).
For starters, it is important to have a place to grow tobacco. A garden would suffice. If you are the planning type you should allot about one square meter for each tobacco plant. The next thing that is preferred (though not necessarily needed) is soil that is rich in organic material. At this point you may stop and say "Aha! But I live in an area where I do not have any space to allot one square meter much less any rich organic soil!" Once again, worry not. If you are lacking plot of dirt for growing you can still enjoy tobacco growing. You merely need a tobacco plant and a twelve litre pot to grow tobacco.
Now that you have your plants and land plotted or appropriate sized pots you are ready to begin to plant and grow tobacco. You may still have to buy cigarettes but that will not last for much longer. The best time to grow tobacco is towards the end of spring or beginning of summer. While growing tobacco make sure that your plants get adequate sunshine. In this case, adequate sunshine means some shade will not harm your tobacco plants.
After a couple of weeks of growing tobacco it might be necessary to fertilise them with nitrogen based fertiliser. If the tobacco growing is done in soil that is rich in organic material then fertilising will not be a necessity. A couple of things to be cautious of when fertilising is the type of fertiliser used and amount of fertilising that takes place while growing tobacco. Fertiliser that encourages tobacco plants to flower will divert nutrients from the leaves (which are the most important part when growing tobacco). If fertilising takes place on a basis that is too regular, the nitrogen levels will be too high and this will complicate a later process important to growing tobacco.
Tobacco plants will grow and grow and grow. They can reach up to seven feet in height but do not worry about the height of the plants as they can support themselves. If you decide to grow tobacco in a windy area you could consider using plant stakes to reinforce the stalks of the plants to prevent them from breaking. If pests and not wind is a concern, for growing tobacco, the concern should not be a huge one. When growing tobacco there are few pests that will attack them but if you do see what you think are pests, heavy chemicals are not needed and a warm mist of water should get desired results just fine. If you do see a slug or a snail it should be removed on sight. Snails and slugs can be damaging to tobacco plants and send you off to buy cigarettes in no time. After about ninety days the plants should be ready to be harvested for curing, rolling, and later enjoyment.
The cost of growing tobacco for cigarettes is much less than that of buying already made cigarettes. When you grow tobacco you are getting a product that you and no one else made. You get the sense of accomplishment of doing something that is low cost, low effort and maximum satisfaction when you grow tobacco.
