By:

Do you have a fireplace you are using or do you have one that you would like to start using? If the answer to this question is yes, then here is another one. Is your fireplace clean enough to use or in good enough shape to use? If the answer to either of these is no or you don't know for sure, then you should have it checked. Some people will use their fireplaces to set the mood of a date but most of the time now, it is to help with the high costs of your heating bills. If you are going to use this fireplace for the first time you really need to have a chimney sweep come into the home to clean and check it first.

When you have these chimney sweeps come in, they will check up the chimney to make sure that it doesn't have some dangerous build-up of soot on the inside of the walls that could cause a severe blaze of fire coming out of this fireplace. They will also tell you of any severe damage of this chimney that could keep you from being able to use this fireplace at all. If they tell you not to use this place until its fixed, then they are telling you that this fireplace isn't safe. If you can't find someone to fix this, then you won't be able to use it.

If you are able to use this fireplace, then use it wisely. Most people, when learning how to use these, learn the do and do not by doing. All fireplaces have a flue that helps regulate the heat that comes out of this wood that you are using. Different kinds of wood put out different heat. Some wood burns hotter than others while some won't put out any real heat at all. The most explosive kind of wood in the fireplace and cause more damage to your chimney is pine. It burns hot and fast and puts out hot heat but will send balls of sticky creosote up your chimney.

This sticky creosote will go up your chimney and stick to the walls. Each time you use this, the soot will keep building until you will really have a time bomb waiting to go off. Each time the soot is warmed up, the new soot will attach itself to this older soot and this could start to drip back down on your fire. This will help the fire get started to become out of control as this stuff will be like small bombs hitting this fire that send it out of this fireplace onto the things close to it.
