Hollywood Chic For Satellite Tv: Five Great Films Set In Los Angeles

By:

While the City of Angles might have a bad reputation for being focused on the networking and not the human experience, there's more to California's home of hit films and filmmaking than just the glitz and glamor of a more superficial or plastic existence. For those who are interested in a combination of the city's more obvious assets with some of its artier moments, there's no better place to start looking than with one's own satellite tv subscription. Those who miss the west coast, want to know more about one of the world's most interesting cities, or who simply desire a great film for an evening in will find all five of these great films set in LA well worth the viewing experience.

#1 - Shampoo. Set in 1968 and filmed in 1975 when Warren Beatty and Goldie Hawn were huge household names, this is the thinly-veiled true story of a famous LA hairdresser who ends up making more of an impression on the ladies as a lothario than as an actual hairstylist. Cutting-edge at the time for showing some of the seedier and more salacious elements of nightlife and counterculture, "Shampoo" also focuses on the fact that it's never good to assume anything about someone's personal life. A dark comedy with music by Paul Simon, it's one worth checking out if it's on satellite tv.

#2 - Earth Girls Are Easy. A musical comedy from 1988, this is one that gets left of of many people's lists, but that is surprisingly hilarious upon watching, even if that's due to the fact that it is of great camp value. With performances by Geena Davis, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, and Jeff Goldblum, it's the kind of lighthearted adventure designed to keep audiences chuckling the whole time, no matter if it's at the implausible plot or good performances.

#3 - Pretty Woman. An unlikely classic, this romantic comedy from 1990 focuses on a Hollywood prostitute who ends up meeting the love of her life while working, though theirs starts out as a business relationship. It's a film set in Los Angeles that makes good use of the city, a great performance on the part of Richard Gere, and a career-defining role for Julia Roberts, whose career took off afterward. Definitely one worth catching on satellite tv.

#4 - Encino Man. While a comedy featuring performances by Brendan Fraser and Pauly Shore might not sound like something fit for consumption in this decade, this touching and fun film was a huge hit in the 1990s. A caveman is thawed out of a block of ice that is discovered while too uncool high school buddies try to dig a pool in one of their backyards. He is trained in the art of cool and helps to make them popular, all the while learning to live in the 20th century. A classic chunk of Valley-speak and 90s nostalgia, and worth watching.

#5 - Ed Wood. For a look inside Hollywood on the D or C list, nothing is better than this biopic starring Johnny Depp as the perpetually failing but shockingly kind B-movie director Ed Wood. Shot in black and white, it gets the rise of new Hollywood and the fall of old Hollywood just perfect, and anyone with satellite tv and an interest in incredible ensemble casts absolutely must watch it.
